Deferred Payments

Deferred Payment Agreements

A Deferred Payment Agreement can help if you need to move into a care home but most of your money is tied up in your home.

It means you may not have to sell your home straight away to pay for your care.

Instead, Sefton Council may pay part of your care home costs on your behalf, and the money is paid back later.

What is a Deferred Payment Agreement?

A Deferred Payment Agreement is a loan from the Council.

The loan helps cover some of the cost of your care home fees.

The money you borrow builds up over time and is usually repaid when your home is sold or from your estate.

How does it work?

You will usually continue to pay a contribution towards the cost of your care based on a financial assessment.

The Council may then pay the remaining amount.

Any money paid by the Council is added to your deferred payment balance.

The longer the agreement is in place, the more money will need to be repaid.

Who might be eligible?

You may be able to apply if:

  • you need long-term residential care
  • you own a property
  • you meet the financial eligibility criteria

We will discuss your circumstances with you and explain whether a Deferred Payment Agreement may be suitable.

Important things to know

A Deferred Payment Agreement is a loan secured against your property.

This means:

  • the amount you owe will increase over time
  • interest and administration charges may apply
  • there will be a legal agreement in place

We will explain all charges and conditions before any agreement is made.

Are there other options?

A Deferred Payment Agreement is not the right choice for everyone.

You may wish to consider other options, such as:

  • using savings or income
  • renting out your property
  • seeking independent financial advice

We can help you understand the options available and answer any questions you may have.
