Southport School Neighbourhood

The first example of our School Neighbourhood approach is shown in our work with Stanley High School (Southport). This school was part of the original School Streets Pilot work for Sefton Council, alongside Greenbank High School and Stanley High School.

Not all streets can be a School Street

Due to the location of the school being next to two busy roads in Southport (Fleetwood Road and Marshside Road) a road closure would not work to help ease the traffic problems around the school.

What we delivered instead

Sustrans and Sefton Council worked with the school to develop alternative measures for traffic calming in the area and delivered two new crossing points and extension of the school zig zags restricting parking on Fleetwood Road.

In addition the Council are continuing to work with the school in supporting active travel for pupils and have provided the school with a new cycle shelter and are planning more engagement activities with the pupils. An image of a bike shelter, it is blue with a large plastic roof and space for around 40 bikes.A slanted angle of a bike shelter next to a school.
