Wraparound Childcare Expanding for Sefton Families

Sefton families now have greater access to affordable, high-quality wraparound childcare thanks to local schools and providers working together to deliver more after-school provision across the borough.

Through the national Wraparound Programme, schools like Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School in Seaforth have successfully launched new childcare services that give parents and carers more flexibility when it comes to work, training or education.

The school introduced its new After School Club in September 2024, offering daily care from 3.15pm to 6.00pm. The club is staffed by two experienced Teaching Assistants and has already received positive feedback from families.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Now that we have our own wraparound care, we can now provide this for our families so that they do not need to look elsewhere for support. The parents knowing the service is available, helps them to consider taking up work or getting themselves back to college. It is also good for parents to know that if they are struggling to pick their child up, they can always ring school to book them into the club. Our themed nights have been a success, and parents and children have asked when the next ones will be, especially Movie Night!’

Initial funding from the Wraparound Programme helped the school get up and running by supporting staffing costs, keeping fees at an affordable rate while the service was established.

Councillor Diane Roscoe, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Schools & Families, said: “It’s fantastic to see local schools and providers taking part in the Wraparound Programme. High-quality childcare plays such a vital role in supporting working families and helping parents return to work or education. I’m delighted to hear about the success of Our Lady Star of the Sea’s new After School Club, and I encourage more families to speak to their local providers to find out what’s available in their area.”

Wraparound childcare is designed for school-aged children and can be offered before and after school, either on-site or through local childminders or community-based providers. Charges do apply, but families are encouraged to speak to their provider about any financial support that may be available.
