To mark National School Governors Awareness Day, Sefton Council is launching a recruitment drive to boost numbers of school governors across the borough.
Give Back and Get Ahead
Sefton is kicking off the #GiveBackGetAhead campaign today to encourage people to think about being a school governor and shine a light on the fantastic governor cohort currently working with our primary and secondary schools.
Cllr Diane Roscoe, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families said:
“I am thrilled to be celebrating our governors on National School Governor Awareness Day. They are a fantastic group of people who give their time and commitment to making our schools the best place they can be.
“Being a school governor is a rewarding and valuable experience and I would urge anyone who has the time and passion for making a difference to our children, families and communities to apply now.”
Wonderful Experience
When asked what she liked best about being a school governor, Carole McBride, Chair of Governors at Great Crosby Catholic Primary School said:
“Seeing great teachers at work and watching the decisions we make as governors having a positive effect on what we can offer children.
“I took on the role of link governor for SEND, which has been a wonderful experience and a chance to contribute to provision for our children who need extra support.”
Lindsey Best, Co-opted Governor at Birkdale Primary said:
“This is a fantastic way to be involved in the local community and do something positive for local children.
“Whatever your background, there will be a way to contribute, even if it is just to provide numbers and therefore a robust team to help make decisions and support the school and their overall aims.
Being a school governor can enhance a CV, provide a place to learn and develop new skills and also give back to the local community and make a difference to children and young people.
Anyone Can Be A School Governor
No formal qualifications are needed to become a school governor; you just need to be aged 18 or over and pass a DBS check. Everyone has a range of experiences and skills to offer and an effective governing body has people from all kinds of different backgrounds.
The Council offers support to schools and governors to enable everyone to feel confident to carry out their roles and schools offer training and support for newcomers as well as specialist roles.
