Sefton Council responds to incorrect information on Promenade scheme

Sefton Council has responded to some public comments about the proposed Southport Promenade Improvement Scheme, which it feels are factually incorrect.

The scheme is part of a wider programme of investment aimed at improving access, safety and connectivity along the town’s Promenade.

It will support increased visitor numbers expected as a result of major developments in Southport, including the Marine Lake Events Centre (MLEC), the restoration of Southport Pier and improvements to the Town Hall Gardens.

The new infrastructure has been designed to deliver improvements to traffic flow, accessibility and safety for all Promenade users.

Planned improvements include:

  • New and improved pedestrian crossing points.
  • Enhanced accessibility for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
  • Improved safety and capacity along the route.
  • Better connections between the town centre, the MLEC, Southport Pier and other seafront attractions.
  • Public realm enhancements to improve the appearance and overall visitor experience.

The Southport Promenade Improvement Scheme scheme forms part of a wider programme to create a more accessible, connected and welcoming town centre and seafront. Recent investment has included improvements to the Market Quarter, which have created new public spaces and strengthened links across the town centre.

A cycling route already exists nearby but is currently affected by construction work associated with the MLEC. Once construction is complete, that route will reopen. The proposed scheme would provide an additional cycle connection, with dedicated infrastructure designed to improve safety by separating cyclists from both pedestrians and motor vehicles.

Overall, the scheme aims to create a safer, more accessible and better-connected promenade that meets future demand and supports Southport's ongoing regeneration.
