A flag is being flown at Bootle Town Hall today, Tuesday 11^th July, to mark Srebrenica Memorial Day.

This year marks the 28^th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, in which over 8000 Muslim men and boys were murdered due to their religious identity. It is the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “As an organisation we believe we must all remain vigilant against these forces, and take positive action to build stronger, more resilient communities.

“At the time this was one of the worst atrocities on European soil since the Second World War.

“Remembering Srebrenica is about learning and remembering what has happened in the past and making a commitment to work against it ever happening again. The lesson from Srebrenica is that no society is invulnerable to prejudice and intolerance.”

The theme for this year’s Memorial Day is ‘Together We Are One’, which aims to remind people to remain vigilant against the forces of hatred which seek to divide them and focus on the things that unite everyone.
