New Canopy Proposal for Bootle Strand Transformation

29 October 2025 2min read

People in Bootle will have chance to see the new design and comment on potential uses for the covered area in the new Mons Square after plans to keep the original canopy have had to be changed.

As part of the ongoing demolition work at Bootle Strand contractors have identified that the structure supporting the Mons Square canopy needs to be removed meaning the cover cannot be retained.

Structural Changes Prompt New Canopy Proposal

A structural element known as a flat truss has been identified. This truss currently provides support to the Mons Square canopy. Unfortunately, because of its position within the demolition zone, the truss must be removed. Keeping the existing canopy in place was explored, but the extra costs involved made this option unfeasible. Importantly, this change will not affect the overall project costs or timeline, which remain as originally planned.  The existing canopy will be removed shortly to enable other work on the transformation project to progress.

A Modern, Sustainable Replacement

The canopy will be replaced with a modern, sustainable structure designed for year-round use. This new design is currently being developed and will be shared with the public.  The new canopy will deliver a high-quality, flexible covered space, accommodating a diverse range of uses including commercial activity, community initiatives and public events.  Sefton Council are asking people what types of use they would like to see in this space.

Sefton Council Encourages Community Engagement

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Skills and Employment, said:

“This is an exciting step forward in the transformation of Bootle Strand. While the existing canopy has served its purpose, the new structure will be designed with the community in mind, creating a vibrant and sustainable space that can host events and activities all year round. A covered space will help maximise the use of the new Mons Square.

“We want local people to be part of this journey, so I would encourage everyone to get involved in the upcoming engagement sessions.”

Commitment to Sustainability

In line with Sefton Council’s strong commitment to sustainability, over 90% of demolition waste from this project is being recycled. Materials from the existing canopy will also be fully recycled off-site.

Upcoming Engagement Sessions

The project team will be hosting engagement sessions at the Bootle Hive to provide more information about the proposed replacement and to also provide an update on wider project progress. Full details of these events will be shared soon.
